Locations of post-tsunami runup surveys and spatial distribution of the maximum heights in the Indian Ocean are shown in Figure 1 (see also ). In our analysis of the runup height distributions the reports of the other international field survey teams have been also used. These runup records will serve as basic data for verifying the tsunami calculations and finite-fault models suggested at earlier stages. The joint operation of experts from different countries in field surveys after this 2004 Sumatra-Andaman earthquake tsunami leads to obtain unique data of the wave characteristics along the coasts of the Indian Ocean. The purpose of this survey is to observe and document the effects of tsunamis, collecting readily available and perishable data as soon as possible so as to learn about the nature and impact of the phenomenon, and be able to make recommendations on the need for further research, planning and preparedness. Korean Society of Coastal and Ocean Engineers (KSCOE) moved rapidly in collaboration with Korea Earthquake Engineering Research Center (KEERC) with supports from KSCOE member companies to perform post tsunami runup survey to document this disastrous tsunami event.
Sumatra-Andaman earthquake tsunami event led to widespread catastrophes particularly in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Maldives, and Thailand with damage also in Malaysia, Bangladesh, Somalia and Seychelles.
